Police Confirm Ex-Downs Midfielder Has Been Found In Possession Of Drugs

The South African Police Service has confirmed that former Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder, Manqoba Ngwenya, has been released on bail from police custody after he was arrested at the weekend. The 36-year-old was taken to the Douglasdale Police Station and was later released on R500 bail.
Police spokesperson, Lieutenant Kay Makhubela, confirmed to the Siya crew that Shakes will appear at the Randburg Magistrates Court next week on charges of drug possession.
“He was arrested in possession of drugs at Monte Casino. The security (personnel) searched him and found that he had drugs and the police were called,” said Makhubela.
Makhubela said the police will be investigating if the drugs found were for personal use or commercial purposes.
Asked about Shakes’ next court appearance, the police spokesperson told the Siya crew, “Next week. Sometime next week, I don’t know the exact date.”
He added that the fine will depend on the findings of the court, should Ngwenya be found guilty of the offence. Apart from Sundowns, Ngwenya had also been on the books of Bidvest Wits, Mpumalanga Back Aces, Thanda Royal Zulu, Alexandra United, as well as Botswana’s Notwane FC and Township Rollers before he retired from playing professional football.
