10 Things you need to know about Kjell Jonevret new Orlando Pirates coach?

Orlando Pirates have announced Kjell Jonevret as the new man at the helm of the Soweto giants, but who is the Swedish-born head coach?

Following the departure of Mushin Ertugral in November last year, caretaker coach, August Palacios stepped in to oversee the club’s bench while management were on the lookout for a new head coach.

After months of speculation and rumours about who will be leading the team forward, the club handed the reins to 54-year-old Jonevret, who is arguably a stranger to the South African football fraternity.

But who is the new head coach in charge of the Bucs and just how much has he accomplished in his coaching career?

  1. Jonevret was the head coach of Viking FK, a top flight club in the Norwegian professional league, however, stepped down from his role at the club in November last year.
  2. Prior to his stint with Viking, the 54-year-old has at least two honours under his belt as a head coach.
  3. The former Viking striker began his managerial career as an assistant coach to Stockholm side, Vasalund, and then went on to coach IF Brommapojkarna before becoming an assistant coach to Sweden-based AIK Fotbol.
  4. After stints with Swedish clubs, IK Sirius, Västerås SK and Café Opera, in the years 1999 until 2003,
  5. Jonevret then went on to have one of the most illustrious spells in his coaching career when he joined up with top flight club, Djurgårdens IF in 2004.
  6. During his time at Djurgardens, the head coach also mentored Amazulu striker Siyabonga Nomvethe and former professional footballer, Lance Davids.
  7. The head coach went on to clinch the Allsvenskan, which is the top league in the country, as well as winning the Svenska Cupen - and
  8. Was named the Swedish Manager of the Year in 2005.
  9. However, his time with Djurgardens came to an end in 2006, where he thereafter joined up with Norwegian side, Molde FK.
  10. In 2009 his side finished off as runners up in both the Norwegian football cup and the Tippeligaen, which is now known as Eliteserien. This all before his stint with Viking in 2012.
