Onyango Takes Home CAF African-Based POTY Award

Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper Denis Onyanyo claimed the African-Based Player of the Year award after his stellar performances while donning the Kabo Yellow colours in 2016.
The Ugandan shot-stopper helped the Brazilians claim the CAF Champions League title, Absa Premiership and Telkom Knockout titles in 2016.
Onyango was awarded the CAF African-Based Player of the Year award at tonight's ceremony, which took place in Abuja, Nigeria.
The three-man shortlist for the accolade consisted of Billiat, Denis Onyango and Rainford Kalaba. However, Billiat just missed out on the award as his teammate collected big on the continental stage.
Onyago claimed the award after receiving 252 votes, with Billiat finishing second in the voting with 228 votes, while Kalaba came in the third spot.

  1. To be honest i dont think Onyango deserves this award,,,KHAMA BILLIAT was a thorn to teams, its his goals that made sundowns win, not Onyango's saves...sundowns hardly kept a clean sheet in 90% of their games, i dont remember Onyango becoming a roadblock to teams, it was downs defence that make him good. The only games i remember Onyango was the Nedbank semis few years back between pirates and Aces (the game where Tso Vilakazi while playing for Aces got a red for nearly beating ref Bennet), Onyango saved almost 20 shots and Aces where lucky to lose only 1-0. That is the game that let supersport to sign him. He never produced a performance like that ever since...
