Venezuela Dump Uruguay Out Of Copa America

South American minnows Venezuela stunned Uruguay 1-0 on Thursday to qualify for the Copa America quarter-finals.

A first-half goal from West Bromwich Albion striker Salomon Rondon was enough to send the 15-time South American champions crashing out in the group stage.

The goal came in the 36th minute, after Venezuela midfielder Alejandro Guerra lobbed Uruguay goalkeeper Fernando Muslera from 30 yards out. The goalkeeper chased back, but could only tip the ball on to the crossbar, and Rondon was on hand to tap the ball into the net.

For Venezuela, it was a first win in nine Copa meetings with Uruguay, while Rondon became the first player from the country to score at three tournaments.

The result saw Venezuela top group Group C with six points, while Uruguay sit in last place without a point from their first two games.
