Payet Nets Winner As France Beat Romania

France secured a 2-1 victory over Romania in the 2016 European Championship opening clash on Friday night.
The first chance of the game fell for Romania in the fourth minute. A corner kick fell for Stancu but his shot from close range was brilliantly saved by Hugo Lloris who made a reaction stop.
At the other end of the pitch Olivier Giroud came close when Dimitri Payet found him with a cross, but the striker's header went wide of the near post.
Les Bleus created most of the chances for the rest of the first half, hitting the woodwork in the 14th minute. Bacary Sagna crossed from the right to pick out Antoine Griezmann, but his header hit the post.
Another big chance was produced by Payet as he drilled a cross towards Griezmann but the Atletico striker's volley was deflected wide by a defender.
In first-half stoppage time France almost netted the opener as Payet's corner fell favourably for Giroud, but the Arsenal man's header went over the bar.
Romania had a great opportunity to take the lead just after the break when Stancu received the ball in space in the France box, but his volley went wide of the far post.
Paul Pogba forced the Romania goalkeeper into a top save when Payet set him up to smash a powerful volley at goal in the 57th minute. Moments later France had their lead as Giroud headed home a Payet cross.
However, in the 65th minute Stancu slotted a penalty to level matters after Patrice Evra made a mistake in the box to give the visitors the spot-kick.
The game looked set to finish in a draw, but in the 89th minute Payet produced a stunning strike that curled into the far top corner of the Romanian net to secure the victory for the hosts.
