CR7 Replaces Mayweather As World's Highest Paid Athlete

Real Madrid superstar Cristiano Ronaldo has leapfrogged boxing star Floyd Mayweather as the world's best paid sportsman, while FC Barcelona's Lionel Messi also moved up the list.

US business magazine Forbes released their 2016 edition of the world's highest paid sportsmen list, with Ronaldo and Messi being the only footballers in the top 10.

The Portuguese forward was named at the top of the ranking, and it is the first time in 16 years that Mayweather or Tiger Woods was not the No.1 earner in sports.

Basketball had three representatives on the list in LeBron James, Kevin Durant and Kobe Bryant, while the rest were made up of golfers, tennis stars and an American footballer.

Here are the highest paid athletes in the world, according to Forbes:

1. Cristiano Ronaldo – $88 million (R1.3bn)

2. Lionel Messi – $81.4 million (R1.2bn)

3. LeBron James – $77.2 million (R1.1bn)

4. Roger Federer – $67.8 million (R1bn)

5. Kevin Durant – $56.2 million (R830m)

6. Novak Djokovic – $55.8 million (R824m)

7. Cam Newton – $53.1 million (R784m)

8. Phil Mickelson – $52.9 million (R781m)

9. Jordan Spieth – $52.8 million (R780m)

10. Kobe Bryant – $50 million (R738m)
