Shakes Names Bafana Squad For Gambia

The coach of the South African senior national team, Ephraim ‘Shakes’ Mashaba, has announced the squad for the upcoming 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier with Gambia.

Bafana Bafana are scheduled to face Gambia in an AFCON qualifier at the Independence Stadium in Bakau on June 4.

Mashaba announced the team at SAFA House today (Thursday).

Bafana’s chances of qualifying for next year’s AFCON in Gabon took a severe blow, following consecutive draws against Cameroon in March, although the team is not mathematically out of the race just yet.

Bafana are third in Group M and have collected three points, while Cameroon lead the group with eight points and Mauritania are second with seven points.

Gambia are at the bottom of the group with two points, with two games left for all the teams to play.

The Bafana squad:

Goalkeepers: Itumeleng Khune, Jackson Mabokgwane, Brighton Mhlongo

Defenders: Ramahlwe Mphahlele, Diamond Thopola, Thabo Matlaba, Erick Mathoho, Sifiso Hlanti, Rivaldo Coetzee, Teboho Langerman

Strikers: Thamsanqa Gabuza, Sibusiso Vilakazi, Ndumiso Mabena, Thobani Mncwango
