San Jorge’s Micael Favre dies after head injury during League match

Argentina football is in shock following the tragic passing of a local footballer in a regional League match played on Sunday.

Third division sides San Jorge and Defensores were in action in their Liga Departamental de Colon match-up in Villa Elisa when 24-year-old Micael Favre was unintentionally kneed in the head while battling for possession.

Amid pushing and shoving thereafter, an opponent struck Favre in the face, knocking him down, with the 24-year-old unable to get up.

He was then rushed to hospital, where he later passed away, as confirmed via a statement from the Argentine FA.

"The Argentine Football Association expresses deep sorrow over the death of Michael Favre, who plays for Club San Jorge," a statement read.

"He died while his team played in the Departmental League of Colon, at Defensores.

"This association also expressed support for the Favre family, as also the Club San Jorge."
