Messi Into Fifth In European All-Time Ranking

FC Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi recently surpassed another legend in the European all-time league goalscoring chart.

The Argentine scored his 312th La Liga goal for the Catalan giants on Sunday, and now has two strikes more than Dixie Dean – the Everton legend netted 310 league goals between 1924 and 1938.

Messi is also closing in on fourth-placed Steve Bloomer, who scored 317 league goals between 1892 and 1914.

The Blaugrana superstar's longstanding rival Cristiano Ronaldo sits in third place with 342 league goals for Manchester United (84) and Real Madrid (258).

Only Bayern Munich legend Gerd Muller, with 365 strikes, and current all-time record scorer Jimmy Greaves, who netted one goal more than his closest rival, are ahead of Ronaldo.

The Portuguese is likely to overtake both during the 2016/17 campaign, as he only needs 25 more goals to become Europe's leading league goalscorer of all time.

Messi could also jump ahead of Muller and Greaves next season, but would need to score 54 goals (minus the amount he scores in the final La Liga game of this campaign).
