Levante End Atletico's Title Hopes

Atletico Madrid dropped out of the La Liga title race, after suffering a 2-1 defeat to Levante on Sunday evening.

The visitors could not have asked for a better start as Fernando Torres pounced onto a Koke through pass to give Atletico a 1-0 advantage only two minutes into the encounter.

The hosts responded with some lovely play and almost grabbed an equalizer in the 10th minute, but Verza’s effort was well saved in the top corner.

The visitors then accepted the challenge, as they too upped the tempo, creating a few opportunities to extend their, but it was Levante who got onto the scoreboard as Casadesus scored a sublime header into the top corner after twenty-nine minutes of play, 1-1.

Atleti tried to get one back but the home side held on and 1-1 is how the teams headed into the half-time break.

Diego Simeone’s men came out firing, but could not finish the product up front. Stefan Savic should have done better with his 53rd minute effort which went agonizingly wide after a smooth headed pass from Gimenez.

Ten minutes later it was Levante’s Morales who came close, but he had to watch his effort go just wide of the mark.

The visitors upped the tempo with the clock winding down, but Diego Marino did exceptionally well to keep Levante in it.

Antoine Griezmann, Torres and Yannick Carrasco all could not convert a couple of chances in the dying minutes of the encounter, and were made to rue their chances as Giuseppe Rossi found himself at the end of an 89th minute fast-break, converting to make it 2-1 and give Levante a stunning victory.
