Dougie Carelse Passes On

Former Cape Town Spurs, Dynamos and Swaraj star, Dougie Carelse, the father of ex-Bafana Bafana midfielder, Brent, has died of cancer, aged 72.

During the 1970s, 'Bullet' as he was affectionately known, plied his trade in the Federation Professional League (FPL) where opponents had to contend with his fierce shot and accurate ball distribution.

After making a huge impact at Spurs, he played alongside Shakes Mashaba at Lenasia-based Swaraj, who in 1977 became the very first inland FPL club to claim the league title.

In 1981, he won the knockout trophy while a player-coach of Vereeniging Old Boys, before retiring two years later.

“My only regret is that I didn’t get the opportunity to prove myself against other top NFL and NPSL players,” he once said. “But the FPL were defiant in their stance against racism by sailing our non-racial flag with players of all colours until unity.”
