Simeone's Atletico Have First Leg Advantage Over Pep's Bayern

An early goal from Saul Niguez handed Atletico Madrid a 1-0 win over Bayern Munich in a UEFA Champions League semifinal, first leg match at the Estadio Vicente Calderón on Wednesday night.

It was almost the perfect start for the home team who took the lead in the 11thminute after a superb individual effort from Niguez which saw the Atletico man work his way into the box and fire the ball into the left corner of the net off the inside of the post, 1-0.

On the half hour mark Antoine Griezmann nearly doubled the lead for Atletico when he darted into the box, but saw his stinging effort brilliantly saved by goalkeeper Manuel Neuer.

Bayern never really threatened in attack in the opening half and entered the break trailing by a goal.

The German team started the second half much better and almost drew level ten minutes after the restart when a 30-yard shot from David Alaba rattled the crossbar.

A minute later Javi Martinez met a corner-kick with a strong header, but his effort was well-saved by the Atletico goalkeeper.

In the 74th minute Arturo Vidal tried his luck from long range, but the Bayern man was denied by the big palms of Jan Oblak.

A minute later Fernando Torres could have put the result beyond doubt on the night when he broke into the box, but saw his 14-yard shot strike the woodwork.

Bayern pushed hard for an equaliser in the final ten minutes of the match, but they were unable to find a goal as Atletico won the semifinal first leg 1-0.
