Can Williams Solve Pirates’ Goalkeeping Woes?

Default
Today we look at Orlando Pirates target, Ronwen Williams and establish whether he has what it takes to become the Buccaneers’ number one, after a difficult season for the men between the posts for the Soweto giants this season.
Williams, on the other hand, has only conceded 10 goals in his 14 Absa Premiership appearances to date, playing a commanding role as deputy to Reyaad Pieterse in Stuart Baxter’s team, keeping six clean sheets. He has conceded the third least goals per game out of any keeper in the Absa Premiership this season, falling behind only Mamelodi Sundowns shot-stopper, Denis Onyango and Bidvest Wits’ Moeneeb Josephs in the leaderboard.
Furthermore, Williams has shown off his nerves of steel, with two penalty saves this season, which is the joint best record in the league. He also has a save per shot rate of 75,9%, which is the fourth best save ratio in the league this season.
However, if he were to join the Parktown-based side, Williams would have to be prepared for a very difficult task, given that Mhlongo and Mabokgwane occupy the top two spots respectively for saves per 90 minutes this season, with 70 saves in total between them and not even counting Ovono or Mpontshane’s tallies.
Williams has shown that he is more than capable of becoming one of the best goalkeepers in the league, but it will not be easy for him to take over as the last line of defence for Pirates and it remains a role that has yet to be adequately filled following the tragic death of Senzo Meyiwa in 2014.
