Last week, Kaizer Chiefs hosted Mamelodi Sundowns at FNB Stadium. Going into the game, Amakhosi were unbeaten in their last seven games, while, on the other hand, Downs were without a win in their last three.
Because of Steve Komphela’s bad record against Mosimane – with the stats showing that, in their nine meetings, Pitso walked away with five victories and four draws - Komphela went into the game in search of his first win over Mosimane.
The confidence was high for the Tshwane-based side, especially after beating another Soweto Giant 6-0 a few months ago. To the Yellow nation, facing Komphela’s Chiefs looked easy and they went to the FNB Stadium with intentions of coming away with nothing but three points. Overconfidence and undermining their opponents killed Downs and made Chiefs players double their work.
After the final whistle, we saw Chiefs manager Bobby Motaung running down from the stands and celebrate. The fans remained in the stands singing non-stop, and it was amazing. Even Komphela was lost for words. That might be the turning point for him, because remember Ruud Krol was once struggling at Orlando Pirates, but when he turned the corner, he won trebles. Even Mosimane had trouble with fans last season, but he turned the corner and won a domestic double, the CAF Champions League and the CAF Super Cup.
