Siphiwe "Shabba" Tshabalala is the top goalscorer in the Soweto Derby of the current crop of players, but who is the all-time record scorer in the biggest fixture on the South African football calendar?
The Kaizer Chiefs star has scored four goals in 24 derby appearances, more than any other player from Orlando Pirates and Amakhosi’s current sides.
However, overall he is still far off the record scorer in the derby. The late Patrick Pule “Ace” Ntsoelengoe has scored a total of 19 goals in 17 years for Kaizer Chiefs – a record which seems hard to beat.
He scored his first goal in the very first derby between the two Sowetan giants in 1970, as Pirates beat their rivals 6-4.
His latest derby goal came in a 2-1 victory for Chiefs in 1982, even though his last derby appearance would only come in 1988.
Ntsoelengoe’s record is eight goals better than the three players tied in second position. Nelson “Teenage” Dladla, Abednigo “Shaka” Ngcobo and Marks Maponyane all netted 11 times.
The latter actually scored for both Chiefs (10) and Pirates (1), while Bucs legend Jomo "The Black Prince" Sono is Pirates' leading derby scorer with nine goals.
