Mere says Platinum Stars cannot show Sundowns "too much respect" on Tuesday

Platinum Stars defender Vuyo Mere says it will be to the side’s detriment if they show Mamelodi Sundowns too much respect in their Absa Premiership encounter on Tuesday.

Dikwena currently find themselves very much in the relegation picture, with the side sitting just two points clear of the bottom two, although they do have two games in hand over second-last Highlands Park.

And while Mere knows the size of the task they face against recently crowned CAF Super Cup champions Sundowns - given the fact the Rustenburg club have drawn their last four league matches - the defender knows that any hesitation from Stars could result in a footballing hiding this week.

Speaking to his club’s official website, Mere said: “We all know about the capabilities of Sundowns. We are not going to talk about their achievements. We know they are a good side with a good coach. We are looking forward to a tough game but we are also a good side.”

Dikwena can, however, take a positive attitude into this week’s Royal Bafokeng Stadium tie after seeing off Songo 1-0 in the CAF Confederation Cup at the weekend to progress past the preliminary round with a 2-0 aggregate victory.

“We are going to take the positives out of the game we played in Mozambique. We can’t give Sundowns too much respect. If we do that we are going to put ourselves under a lot of pressure.

“They are African champions but on the night it’s 11 versus 11. I hope the guys are ready.”
