“Play Me… Or I’m Going To Shoot You!”

Former Kaizer Chiefs defender, Themba Seli, has recalled a time when one of his Free State Stars colleagues brought a gun to camp with him.

Seli, who made his professional debut back in 1993 while playing for Vaal Professionals, made a name for himself while playing for Ea Lla Koto – going on to sign for the Amakhosi – and says in this week’s In Touch that those were his best years.

He does recall one story regarding Patrick Mbuthu, who had grown disillusioned with not playing, with the player taking things into his own hands.

Seli said, “He was just something else! I remember one time he came to camp with a gun. He was not playing at the time and apparently had had enough of it. He told (Peter) Nyama, “Tomorrow I’m playing… or else I’m going to shoot you!”

“Funnily enough, he played that Saturday, scored and we won 1-0. From that day onwards, he became a regular in the team until went to Kaizer Chiefs.”
