United nearly restored their lead in the 26th minute but Diego Benaglio pulled off a stunning reflex save to keep out Maroune Fellaini's towering header.

Wolfsburg took the lead a few minutes later, as Julian Draxler combined well with Max Kruse, before teeing up Vieirinha for the easiest of tap-ins from six-yards out.

The hosts were almost gifted a goal in the 38th minute when Draxler pounced on a slip from Memphis, however the German midfielder fired straight at De Gea from 12-yards out.

United had the ball in the back of the net just before the halftime break but Mata was flagged for offside, as he was adjudged to have interfered with play.

Van Gaal's side saw most of the ball in the opening exchanges of the second half and they were nearly level in the 60th minute but Benaglio pulled off a stunning save to keep out Memphis' acrobatic effort.

De Gea had to be at his best in in the 66th minute, as the United shot-stopper pulled off a superb save to keep out a potential own goal from Jesse Lingard.

Van Gaal introduced Nick Powell and Michael Carrick for the final 20 minutes with the hope bagging an equaliser.

United continued to push for an equaliser and had the chance to level the score in the 74th minute but Memphis curled his free-kick wide of the upright from the edge of the area.

The visitors managed to grab an equaliser in the 81st minute, as Fellani's towering header was turned home by Wolfsburg's Josuha Guilavogui.

However, Wolfsburg restored their lead just two minutes later as an un-marked Naldo headed home for his second goal of the night.

The German outfit held on for the win, which has secured qualification and top spot in the group, while United will now play in the Europa League.
